Longtimer on Audiworld, but my first post in years. My car's a 99.5 A4 Avant.
Last summer I was away a lot and never got around to putting on the 17" Ace Lolas with Pole Position S-03s.
This spring I had the changeover made, and something was wrong. For one thing, the shop that did the changeover last time had apparently pulled the balancing weights off! But even with that corrected (different shop) the car felt funny, like the balancing still wasn't right: vibration at 20-25 mph, more tramlining than I remember. The shop had said the tires had some uneven wear but I don't know how.
Before I could get them looked at again, the car was sideswiped while parked, damaging the ds rear panel and taking out the tire on that corner.
Now I've got to decide what to do:
-Replace one tire, probably okay since the others are not very worn. Have to solve the vibration issue though--maybe rebalancing, maybe the hubcentric spacers aren't on right?
-Replace all the 17s with something more versatile and suitable for my use here in Chicago. The S-03s are not even recommended for use in freezing temperatures. I don't track the car and really don't need the max performance. In fact a good all season would probably work for me, say the Michelin Exaltas. Maybe I could get something a bit more narrow than the 235/45s on now--I think the 7.5" Lolas would take 215.
-Say screw it, sell the Lolas and go to all seasons on my stock 16s. This would help with the hazards of city driving....but it would diminish some of the pleasure I take in the way the car drives and looks.
Any suggestions welcome!

Al

Yep.
One of the Chicago Audi-ers said that the plastic hubcentric rings are a problem with these wheels, but it seems they are common to many aftermarket wheels. He suggested that I could have some machined from aluminum, but from what I've been able to glean, they have to be plastic as metal would react against the iron of the hub, corrode, etc.
I wonder though...
