Default Wife hates driving...

She's telling me that the car keeps moving all over the road when she is driving in the city, while I drive on the highway and don't really notice it. I am wondering if it is related to tire size (235/45/17) and would aanother size be a better fit?
1997 A4

Thanks,

Default B5 A4's used 225-45-17s for most cases. There would be less tramlining with a

narrow tire. But they will still tramline. Different tires tramline less than others. You may also want to check the alignment.

15-16" wheels with narrow tires like a 205 tramline much less than a wider tire. a softer sidewalled tire might also be advantagous for her.

Default Good post. Also how wide are the wheels? If they are 7" you could use 205/50R17

If they're wider you can help the tramlining further by going to the size EBG suggested as well as using a less aggressive all-season tire like the Bridgestone G009 or Conti Pro Contact. These won't have the same sharp handling or steering response of summer performance tires, but they'll ride more softly, tramline less and wear longer.

Tires

Default Wow, thanks for the information...

I believe they are 7". That sounds like a better tire size. They are Falken FK451 summer tires, but to make her happy I am willing to change!

Default by the looks of it, i'd say your rims are at least 7.5, maybe 8" wide...

Just seeing how your 235/45 tires look on those rims in your pic poster...

But even if they're 7.5" wide, you can still mount 205/50 tires on them, it's just that you will have zero curb rash protection (not sure if that is a concern with your wife). But if they're 8" wide, the 205/50 tire size is rather out of the question.

Default I think they are 7" as the tire says it is not for a 7.5" rim...

I had purchased the rims used and went with the same tire choice as what was on them before - might have been a bad idea. I will have to take a closer look at them when I swap on the winter rims.

Default hmm...

you said you currently have 235/45/17 tires right? The recommended rim width range for this size tires is from 7.5 to 9 inches.

Default Now you have me thinking...

Would most rims have this stamped on the back? They are older ABT A7's and there is not a lot of information on any of the ABT sites about them.

yes, that info should be stamped somewhere on the rim.

Not that anything bad has happened, but how bad if it is a 7.5 rim with a tire that says not for 7.5
