Will 225/55/17" fit on an 96 A4 w/ stock suspension?

It would probably work but you are better of with 225/45/17.
Going with a taller tire will cause your speedometer to read inaccurately and your ABS could malfunction.
Stick with 225/45's your better safe than sorry

The 225/55 is 7.1% bigger than your stock overall diameter making this tire almost 2 inches bigger.
I know this isn't what you want to hear but I strongly suggest you get the right tire size.

I currently have 225/60/16s on stock rims. I've had them for 9 months (30k miles!). They rub in the rear when i'm at a sharp angles both lengthwise and widthwise. I keep checking, and so far, no damage (the tires were free from an A8, same as this rim-tire setup i'm looking into)
