Gary @ Tirerack... mainly directing this at you, but thought others might have the same question so posting in a forum. I have some questions regarding different tires sizes for winter tires. I have an 06 A4 Quattro with 234/45 R17's. I live in Colorado and in the past winters have just ran ultra high performance all season tires rated high in snow and ice. But I moved to Steamboat Springs and want to totally switch to separate tires for the more extreme conditions up here.
I see on the TireRack site the alternate tire for 17's is a 225/45. I understand that many people believe going to the narrower footprint is ideal. But would I want a 225/45 or 225/55? I understand the ratio difference between the two, but how will that affect tire performance?
I'm also toying with the idea of buying some older rims online that are only 16", but is there anything to worry about with them fitting if they are the 5x112 bolt pattern?

The main problem with 16" wheels on this car will be brake clearance. Unfortunately the only way to tell if a given 16" wheel will fit over your brakes would be to test fit them.
