I was just playing with tire pressures and noticed that my Nitto 555extreme allows max pressure of 50psi (225/40/18). I've checked the archive and people say they only use like 38-40 psi on their 225/40/18 tires, but wouldn't that be a bit low? I always thought running 3-4 psi less than their max would be the best ideal pressure to run for performance and comfort.

That's the maximum recommended pressure for that particular tire according to the tire manufacturer. Keep in mind that that same exact tire (size and all) could be spec'd on a lighter car and/or a heavier car than the A4. So always inflate your tires based on what the car manufacturer recommends and of course, never exceed the max PSI listed on the sidewall.

Actually, the original poster of that said his were inflated to around 40psi, well above what Audi recommends. He was told that overinflating the tire doesn't allow the tire bend with a bump, so all the energy of the impact is delivered to the rim. If I remember right
