Audi A3: How to Change Manual/DSG Transmission Fluid

Materials Needed

  • Jack and jack stands
  • 12 point triple square bit
  • Drain pan
  • Fluid fill kit

Step 1 – Jack up the car

Use your jack to raise the car, then secure it with jack stands. Don't go under the car unless it's secured with jack stands.

Step 2 – Drain transmission fluid

Your manual transmission is equipped with two plugs: a drain plug and a fill plug. The fill plug is located on the side of the transmission, and the drain plug is located on the bottom. When it comes to transmissions with separate drain and fill plugs, always remove the fill plug first. You want to be sure that you can actually access and remove the fill bolt before removing the drain plug, and rendering your car permanently immobilized. Turn the drain plug counterclockwise with your 12 point triple square bit, then let the fluid drain in a drain pan. When it's done, tighten the drain plug to 23 ft/lbs.

Step 3 – Fill transmission with fresh fluid

With the drain plug closed, connect the hose from your fill kit into the fill plug through the engine compartment, then fill the top of the funnel with fresh fluid and let gravity fill the transmission. Once the fluid starts dripping out of the fill plug, this means your transmission is full. Close the fill plug and tighten it to 23 ft/lbs.
