Audi A4 B8: How to Replace Brake Lights
Brake lights are essential for your safety on the road. This article will show you how to replace a burned out brake light or replace the brake light housing.
This article applies to the Audi A4 B8 (2005-2015).
Burned out brake lights can be a hazard for you and anyone driving behind you. So it's very important that you replace broken or burned out brake lights as soon as possible. It's not that difficult and it doesn't require a trip to the dealership. So you can save yourself some money just by changing your own brake lights.
Materials Needed
- Replacement brake light bulb or brake light housing
- Phillips screwdriver
Step 1 – Remove brake light housing
To access the brake light bulbs, you'll have to remove the brake light housing. Open the trunk, and on the side there should be a panel that you can remove. Inside you will see a large plastic retaining screw that sticks out from the back of the brake light housing. Turn this screw counterclockwise and loosen it all the way. If you're having a hard time turning it, there are also holes drilled into the sides of the screw where you can fit a screwdriver and turn it like you would a ratchet.
Once the screw is removed, you'll be able to slide the brake light housing out and away from the car. Disconnect the electrical connector if you are also replacing the brake light housing.
Step 2 – Change the brake light bulbs
On the back of the brake light housing you'll see a cover held down by four Phillips screws. Remove these screws and the back cover will separate from the rest of the housing. The bulbs are plugged into the back cover. You simply need to pull the bulbs off the cover to remove them.
If you're installing new bulbs, just insert the bulb onto the back cover of the brake light housing. Then reattach the cover to the rest of the housing. Tighten down the four screws to the back cover.
To replace the brake light housing, just reconnect the electrical connector and then reinsert the brake light housing to the car. Tighten down the retaining screw inside the trunk. Then you're all down. Be sure to test the new brake lights before you start driving. Make sure that the turn signals work as well.
