This article applies to the Audi A6 C6 (2005-2011).

The Audi A6 C6 is equipped with a high pressure fuel pump, which injects the fuel at a high pressure into the engine. Unfortunately, with such incredible technology comes some issues. The high pressure fuel pump in the Audi A6 has been known to fail, which can activate a code that would lead to one of three things: the low pressure fuel sensor, the high pressure fuel sensor, or the high pressure fuel pump. Fortunately, replacing the HPFP isn't too hard of a task. Read on to learn how you can do it yourself in the Audi A6.

Audi A6 C6: How to Replace High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)

Materials Needed

  • Socket
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Drain pan

Step 1 – Move coolant crossover pipe

Before you can move the coolant crossover pipe, which will allow you to access the bottom bolt of the HPFP, you need to drain the coolant. Place the pan under the drain plug of the radiator, then turn the drain plug counter-clockwise. Let the coolant drain. Move the clamp off the hose connected to the coolant crossover pipe, then remove the two bolts holding the pipe in place.

Step 3 – Install HPFP

Install the pump the same way the old one was installed. Tighten the three screws, then install the coolant crossover pipe in place. Refill the radiator with coolant. If the HPFP was reinstalled correctly, the car should fire right up. With coolant in the system, remove the overflow tank cap, start the car and allow the system to "burp" itself to get rid of any bubbles for about 10 to 15 minutes before refitting the cap and test driving the car.
