Let's face it. One of the easiest (and cheapest) modifications you can make on an Audi is to update the color of the rims. This popular and inexpensive modification is easy to execute for a number of reasons, including the fact that you won't need to mix together any messy products or buy any specialized tools or materials. If you've used a can of spray paint before (and even if you haven't), then you'll be able to complete this very straightforward do-it-yourself (DIY) project without any complications or worries.

Materials Needed

  • Can(s) of Plasti-Dip
  • Can(s) of Pre-Dip Spray (surface preparation)
  • Can(s) of Plasti-Dip Glossifier
  • Masking tape (optional)
  • Index cards or playing cards (optional)
  • Microfiber cloth(s)
  • Plastic bag(s)
  • Wheel cleaner
  • Car soap

Step 1 – Prep and protect

Prepare your wheels by first cleaning and then spraying them with several coats of Pre-Dip Spray. Spray the product directly onto a clean microfiber cloth, and then use the cloth to spread the Pre-Dip Spray along the wheel. You don't want excess spray and moisture to build up on the wheel before the painting process beings.

Next, protect your calipers, rotors, and other parts by covering them with a plastic bag (use more as needed). To do this, you'll need to thread the bag(s) through the spokes of the wheel, and then use your hands to spread the bag(s) over your calipers, rotors, and other parts. Open the bag up to ensure the entire area is completely masked off. The plastic bag(s) should not come into contact with any of the spokes on the wheel.

Pro Tip

It's recommended that you use a professional-level wheel cleaner to clean your wheel. Car soap will also suffice. Mix the soap with water, as directed by the manufacturer, and be sure to remove all contaminants, including brake dust, dirt and grime, from each wheel.

Step 2 – Add 3 to 5 coats of paint

Go ahead and spray the first coat of paint onto the rim, using an evenly distributed back-and-forth motion. Allow the first coat of paint to dry before adding any additional coats. Be sure to go completely around the wheel. To achieve the best level of coverage, stick with light coats of paint. You might also want to rotate your wheel or apply the paint using an alternate angle. Add up to five coats of paint.

Pro Tip

You may insert index cards or playing cards along the lip of the tire to protect it from overspray. You will remove them once your final coat of paint cures.

Step 3 – Add glossifier

Add approximately two coats of glossifier to the rim. Allow the glossifier to dry, and then allow the paint to cure overnight. Do not drive your Audi for 24 hours or brake dust and road debris could compromise the quality of the finish.

Pro Tips

  • Remove the plastic bag(s) once the glossifier dries. Work the plastic bag(s) out slowly.
  • If you didn't use index cards or playing cards to protect your tires, go ahead and pull off the excess overspray using your hands.
  • Once the Plasti-Dip cures, you will be able to drive your car.
