So long three doors…hello five doors

Audi has closed the door on its three-door model, and instead opted for a five-door design moving forward. Due to be unveiled at the now-canceled 2020 Geneva Motor Show, attendees would have learned more about why the German luxury carmaker opted for this approach over the more established three-door alternative, but all indications suggest that this has to do with improving the hybrid vehicle’s overall range.

Other design updates

So, if you look at the numbers, you can tell right away from the A3 Sportback’s dimensions that this car is an iterative design: the wheelbase is unchanged at 2.64m while the 4.34cm length, 1.82cm width, and 1.42m height pretty much mirror the last A3 to roll out of the Audi factory. That said, the actual approach to the design has evolved, and the styling has a few nice new points to it.

A smarter ride (for the environment)

All gas-powered cars will come outfitted with a special particulate filter to deliver cleaner emissions. A pair of plug-in hybrids will follow soon after the launch of the A3 Sportback to give those with deeper pockets and a desire to save the world one car ride at a time, a formal option for a cleaner ride. At launch, the new Audi A3 will come only with a front-wheel-drive layout, but it won’t be long before quattro-equipped models join the lineup, and the company’s updated Haldex 6 4wd system will be offered in other models in due time.

What’s powering the A3 sportback?

No surprises here: What you get in the A3 Sportback is exactly what you’d expect following the latest wave of MQB compact cars. In the A3 Sportback, you’ll enjoy a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline unit offered in the traditional model; eventually, there will be a mild-hybrid alternative down the road. Both turn out 150 horsepower and are joined by a smaller three-cylinder 1.0-liter unit with 110 hp. Those looking to purchase the vehicle will get to pick from either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic, but the electrified powertrain is an S Tronic-only thing. The company states there will be other engines, topping out with the 2.5-liter five-cylinder of the RS3 with around 400 horsepower. Two plug-in hybrid versions using the same setup (1.4 TSI + electric motor + six-speed DSG) as the electrified Golf are also expected to be released, with some electric range suitable for the city.

A cabin you’re not going to want to leave

As with all Audi’s, the cabin features a premium design that makes for a fun ride. With the A3 Sportback, you’ll get all of the latest and greatest electronics, powered by Audi's third-generation infotainment system which, it’s worth noting, can now store up to six different user profiles for things like preferred seat position, previous navigation destinations, climate settings, and more. An angular dashboard displays a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that can be increased to a 12.3-inch size (for a nominal fee, of course). The infotainment system is being advertised as ten times more powerful than the old setup. It has a 10.1-inch diagonal and is nicely integrated into the center console – as opposed to sticking out from the dashboard like the previous model.
