2020 Audi A4 Allroad quattro Makes More Sense than Most SUVs

If you love the classic Audi wagon design aesthetic, but require some off-road ability, the A4 Allroad is for you.

Subtle looks

To the untrained eye, this might look like a 2020 A4 Avant with some fancy door sill protection and plastic wheel arch cladding. But it is so much more than that. This is the latest A4 Allroad quattro - a vehicle that makes most crossovers and compact SUVs appear like they are trying too hard.

Taller and more capable than a conventional A4 Avant

The current A4 Avant is a gloriously attractive wagon. Those long roof proportions just happen to work excellently with the A4's overall length and wheelbase. Viewed side-on, the Allroad's stance is more purposeful - which is courtesy of a 1.4-inch increase in ground clearance.

It is a touch wider at the wheels

The A4 Allroad's rear-three quarter perspective shows its attractively styled tailgate design. But of more importance is a slightly wider track, which has been spaced-out by 0.4-inches on the rear axle. At the front, A4 Allroad's tracking width increases by 0.2-inches. Why has Audi made the Allroad's overall track wider than a normal A4's? To ensure increased stability, balancing its increase in ride height with a more stable platform.

A compact but potent off-road wagon

The 2020 model year A4 Allroad gains Audi's latest SUV-inspired grille design. Sitting behind that grille is a powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The four-cylinder powerplant boasts 245hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. Those outputs are channeled amongst all four wheels via Audi's vaunted quattro system. Overall performance is harmonized by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The A4 Allroad will run 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds, before clocking a true top speed of 153mph.

A great road tripping cockpit

The A4 Allroad cabin is a study in all things great about Audi design. Materials and shapes flow into a calming overall ambiance and design theme. All digital elements are intuitive and build-quality is excellent. This is certainly an environment where you can spend hundreds of miles journeying over a vacation, and never feel fatigued.

You won't need to leave gear behind

As with any Avant, the A4 Allroad's particular appeal is how much gear or luggage it can take along for any adventure. Luggage capacity rates at an impressive 17.5 cu-ft with the rear seats in use. If you don't have second-row passengers along for the ride, you can fold those seats flat and usher in a huge 52.8 cu-ft of luggage capacity.

You don't really need that SUV

But this is what the A4 Allroad is really about. Although it might not be a rock-crawling 4x4, its all-wheel-drive set-up and cleverly configurable traction control make for a very competent gravel travel vehicle. On mild trails, this Audi A4 has no issue roughing it a touch, to get you to that isolated destination. The A4 Allroad's overall style and general driveability shame most SUVs, and when you need to slightly off-road, it is entirely capable.
