1. Specific Models

Audi has discussed buying back 25,000 older Audi vehicles equipped with 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter TDI engines, specifically.  On October 25th, a judge settled the ongoing $14.7 billion dollar case involving the 2.0-liter engines, and it was decided that the 2010-2013 and 2015 Audi A3 are the specific models eligible for buyback.

The 3.0-liter TDI engine was placed in Audi A6, A7, A8, A8L, Q5 and 2009-2016 Q7 SUVs. Owners of the Q7 from the years 2009 to 2012 will qualify for the buyback at the retail value because VW cannot retrofit the vehicle enough for it to be in compliance.

2. There's No Fix

Audi has been unable to make the affected TDI engines compliant with emission standards. VW suggested running a software reflash, but they've been unable to get the EPA's approval on its ability to solve the issue. There's still no solution to making the affected cars cleaner.

3. The Cost

As disclosed in the settlement for 2.0-liter engines, Audi owners of affected A3s will get a cash payment in addition to any buyback value, ranging from $5,100 to $10,000. The judge also ordered VW to pay $2.7 billion towards an environmental trust, and an additional $2 billion over 10 years towards technology for zero emissions vehicles.

4. What to Do if You Own an Affected Audi

For now, owners and lessees of the specific models eligible for buyback can either accept a full buyback, terminate their lease, or "receive an approved emissions modification" if a solution does become available. But owners shouldn't hold their breath waiting around for a fix that may never come to fruition. The deadline to act is September 2018.
