The Super Wagon's Super Wagon

The AudiWorld content team recently had a chance to check out the all-new Audi RS6 GT in person at the Willow Springs International Raceway. And though the idea of driving a station wagon on a race track seemed like a bit of a strange proposition, our time with the sportiest of the world's sport wagons gave us a new perspective. Inspired by one of the ultra-popular IMSA GTO Audi race car, the RS6 GT is built to do everything the regular RS6 Avant does, but in a more aggressive way. And the design speaks to that philosophy.

1. More Aggressive Front Fascia

The front of the RS6 GT features a significantly more sporty aesthetic than its sibling, the RS6 Avant. The larger air inlet area painted in black gives the front of the vehicle a uniquely aggressive look, and the slot above the grill is divided into three as a visual ode to the IMSA race car it's inspired by. The down-the-road graphics of this limited-edition Audi set the tone for the track-focused nature of this beast.

2. Wheels Inspired by Avus Concept

We love it when an automaker gives us throwbacks to its own cool concepts. The design of the RS6 GT's wheels is a tribute to that of the memorable Audi Avus concept of 1991. And this super wagon is an appropriate application for an awesome wheel design we thought we would never see in production.

3. Carbon Fiber Hood

While the carbon-fiber hood is there mainly for the purpose of weight saving, it would be a shame not to show off some of that carbon weave on the outside. As such, Audi's designers have worked an integrated exposed carbon graphic element into the hood design, further adding to its sporty character.

4. Fender Air Flow Element

Probably this writer's personal favorite unique design element of the Audi RS6 GT, the air-out slot behind the front wheel in the carbon-fiber fender is actually not just for the looks! It does in fact serve an aerodynamic purpose, allowing the flow of air through the wheel well. Show us another production station wagon that has something like that! We'll wait...

5. No Roof Rails

The sight of a wagon with no roof rails is a bit strange, no doubt. We've grown accustomed to seeing the overhead storage compartment with well-integrated sporty designs matching the personality of our sporty wagons. But when it comes to aerodynamic efficiency, this particular wagon simply does not mess around! Hence, the roof rack has been deleted to allow for smooth air flow into the rear wing.

6. Double-Decker Rear Wing

A direct point of inspiration from the aforementioned IMSA GTO race car, the RS6 GT's rear spoiler features an open-slot design that directs airflow above the decklid and below the upper wing element. The double-level rear wing is an awesome nod to the classic Audi racer, and it looks right at home with the wagon.

7. Sporty Rear Diffusor

Mirroring the aerodynamic function of the rear wing, the diffuser also features a slot that directs airflow through for an aerodynamic advantage. While we're back here, a less noticeable aerodynamic addition on the trunk lid is a panel that rounds the surface from the bottom of the truck lid to the top of the rear bumper cover! Attention to little details like this shows just how serious Audi engineers were about designing the ultimate track-focused RS6.

8. RS6 Badges With Audi Sport Colors

And lastly, another subtle but very cool touch on the part of the Audi design team on this vehicle is the inclusion of the Audi Sport colors in the RS6 badges around the car. And it's the attention to the small details that we appreciate the most!
