Unconventional Protection

When you think of armored vehicles, you probably envision those huge, heavy trucks that deliver cash to and from financial institutions. But for folks who can't go anywhere without worrying about a possible attack, a little more discretion is required. And that's where this slick Audi RS7 from AddArmour comes into play.

Speed Is of the Essence

Sure, a tank might protect you from bullets and explosives. But as AddArmor CEO Pete Blaber explained to Forbes, what then? "In a combat zone, if you drive into an ambush, your first priority is to drive out of it. A vehicle with steel armor is heavy, slow and doesn’t turn or brake well."

Minor Weight Gain

Blaber is a retired Lt. Colonel and Delta Force commander, so he knows a thing or two about surviving an ambush. "To survive, you must make sensible choices. Our composite armor and defensive systems give options if you’re caught in spontaneous anarchy or are under attack," Blaber explained. "B6-grade composite armor and ballistic glass weigh only 3.3 pounds per square foot, adding about 1000 pounds to the vehicle."

Fast and Tough

Thus, this RS7 is still capable of accelerating and maneuvering its way out of trouble. But at the same time, its B6 armor is capable of stopping anything from an AK-47 7.62 x 51 round to a .223 M16 or AR-15 round. That is, if the baddie shooting at you can hit your fast-moving target, to begin with.

Spy Car

If all of that isn't enough, this RS7 is also fitted with a bunch of features that would make James Bond proud. Here in the trunk, you'll find canisters for pepper spray and a smoke screen, for example.

Overcompensation

To handle the extra weight added by all this gear, famed Audi tuner APR also adjusts the car's twin-turbo V8 to produce a whopping 765 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. Which is more than enough to compensate for the added heft.

Barely Noticeable

This Audi's many protection systems are also quite hard to spot. Just take a look at this tiny pepper spray dispenser, which is neatly tucked into the top of the roof B-pillar.

Loud and Clear

Then there are the many, many other protection systems built in. This P.A. system is modeled after the ones used in police cars, designed to startle attackers and give you a few seconds to get away.

Shocking Revelation

Then there are the electrified door handles that deliver a 120-volt shock to anyone foolish enough to grab them. And the landing lights, typically used on small aircraft, which are bright enough to blind anyone approaching the car from behind.

Extra Protection

This Audi even has steel beams under the front bumper that allow it to ram through barriers, plus red and blue lights to persuade people to get out of your way. Altogether, this RS7 is a pretty comprehensive system for anyone who might find themselves often at risk. Or if you just want some peace of mind while driving through a bad neighborhood!
