Intro

Today when people have questions, they often look to Google for answers. And that is exactly what we did today. In the Google search bar, we entered the text “Is an Audi.” We let Google predictive search take over from there and finish the question. That gave us some insight into what the general public is asking regarding Audi. The results were interesting to say the least. Many of these questions are not what a knowledgeable Audi enthusiast would ask. But before you become a knowledgeable Audi enthusiast you have to start somewhere, and these questions are where most people seem to start. Read on to find out the most common questions, the answers to them, and our interpretation of them.

1. Is an Audi a Luxury Car?

The list of commonly asked questions begins with the question of Audi being a luxury car. The answer to this question is an overwhelming yes. The design, technology, quality of materials, and of course the price, make Audi a luxury brand. Now an A8 is going to be more luxurious than an A3 of course, but the Audi brand overall is one of a premium luxury automaker. It is most often compared to BMW and Mercedes products. And, as part of the Volkswagon Group, Audi sits above Volkswagen and below Porsche.

2. Is an Audi Expensive to Maintain?

This is one of the more prudent questions on this list. It is likely asked by people that are seriously considering purchasing their first Audi. And they want to know what they are getting themselves into. Well, there is no way to sugarcoat the answer here. Yes. Audi vehicles are expensive to maintain. Although the Volkswagen Group and its suppliers produce a large number of shared parts used across all of its brands -- which is sometimes a way to save money -- you will spend far more on average to maintain an Audi than you would a mainstream brand like Honda or Toyota. Even luxury brand Lexus is significantly less expensive to maintain than Audi.

Further complicating measures, Audis typically have compact engine bays, which can make certain services take longer and cost more. And Audis often feature the latest and greatest technologies, which cost more to maintain and repair than standard issue parts.

3. Is an Audi R8 a Supercar?

The R8 is not in production anymore but still people seem to ask all the time if it is considered a supercar. The term supercar is one that folks get caught up in all the time and it has a somewhat nebulous definition. Answers seem to be split on this one. Some sources say the R8 is a supercar, and others dismiss it. The R8 certainly has the performance to be called a supercar, but a supercar needs more than that. It needs sexy looks, exotic materials, and a high price tag. All things that come with the R8. However, even though Audi is a luxury brand, it is not on the same level as Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. If you want an R8 and have the means, you should buy one and not give a darn if people refer to it as a supercar or not.

4. Is an Audi Q5 a Good Car?

Other than the R8 question we previously covered, this is the only other common question to refer to a specific model. In this case it is the best-selling model in the Audi lineup, the Q5. The Q5 is popular because it looks great, performs well, is luxurious and priced right. But is it any good? The majority of Google answers indicate that it is. It is one of those ‘just right’ models that offers the perfect mix of price, size and performance.

5. Is an Audi Reliable?

Going hand in hand with the previous question about maintenance costs is this question about reliability. Some folks will swear by their Audi and say that an Audi is the most reliable car you can get. And it's also true that a vigilantly well-maintained vehicle tends to reward owners. But those folks are in the minority we are afraid to say. The data suggests that Audi vehicles rank as some of the least reliable on the market. In the most recent J.D. Power reliability study Audi ranked almost dead last, beating out only Chrysler.

6. Is an Audi a Good First Car?

Answers seem to be split on this one. First, let’s assume that people asking this question are referring to reasonable Audi models like an older A4 or something. (Getting a 2023 R8 GT for a new teen driver is clearly not wise even if you can afford it.) The upside of getting a reasonable Audi for a first car is that they are safe and practical machines; Audi is well known for its quattro all-wheel drive systems, which is especially helpful for first-time owners who live in colder climates. The downside is that they are expensive to insure and maintain, especially if you've purchased a heavily used older model that may have missed some maintenance.

7. Is an Audi a Foreign Car?

It may surprise you to see this as one of the most common Audi questions, but there must be a number of people out there that think Audi is a domestic brand. Of course, that is not the case. Audi's headquarters are in Ingolstadt, Germany. Although not every Audi is made in Germany. They also make vehicles in Mexico, Belgium, Brazil, Slovakia, and other countries. However, Audi does not make any vehicles in the United States. So, there is no way Audi could be considered anything but a foreign car brand.

8. Is an Audi a Volkswagen?

Technically yes, but there is more to it than that. Audi is part of the Volkswagen brand. And there are many parts that are shared between Volkswagen and Audi models. But there are also parts and materials that make Audi vehicles unique. An Audi RS6 Avant is not simply a VW with an Audi logo on the grille. And, typically, Audis feature more technology, quality materials like leather, and driving dynamics than their VW cousins. The VW group owns several premium brands including Porsche and Lamborghini, so Audi is in good company.

9. Is an Audi a Good Used Car?

The answers to this question seem to be split. The general consensus is that if you find an Audi that was well cared for, and you plan to do the same, that an Audi can make an excellent used car. As we covered in previous questions, you will pay more for the privilege of owning an Audi, and reliability may not be on par with something like Toyota. But Audi vehicles do tend to depreciate at a decent clip which makes them attractive buys on the used market.

10. Is an Audi Better than BMW?

You knew we couldn’t get through this entire list of questions without at least one being about rival BMW, right? Well, we didn’t, and the question is a humdinger. Is Audi better than BMW? We all love the Audi of course. But the Google results are mixed. Reliability seems to go in favor of the BMW. However, the design goes to Audi, in a big way. Also, overall people seem to feel the BMW models offer a bit more sport than the Audi models, but the Audi models offer more luxury. So, the answer to this question is yes and no.
