Three Motors

Audi is determined to position its all-electric E-Tron as a proper performance SUV alternative. And now, they've taken their biggest step yet to achieve that goal. The automaker just announced that their two new performance models of the 'ute - the E-Tron S and E-Tron Sportback S will both of be powered by a new three-motor system.

More Power

Audi is adding a third electric motor to both models, which means two will reside in the rear axle and one on the front axle. That will bump output up from 265kW to 320kW, or 370kW in an eight-second boost mode, which equates to around 350, 429, and 496 horsepower.

Cutting Time

That extra power is good enough to shave a full second off the regular E-Tron's 0-60 time, bringing it down to 4.3-seconds. That may not be mind-blowing by any means, but it's still a pretty impressive number for a luxurious four-door vehicle, regardless.

First to Market

Audi will also be the first automaker to market with a tri-motor electric vehicle, just beating out Tesla and its forthcoming "Plaid" versions of the Model S, X, Roadster, and Cybertruck. However, the S versions of the E-Tron will not receive a bigger battery, as Audi has opted to utilize the existing 95kWh unit.

Range Anxiety

Thus, we have to wonder what sort of range the E-Tron S models will wind up with. The regular E-Tron offers just over 200 miles of range, and you have to imagine that the S will be under that. Especially when you factor in the extra weight of the third motor. But for now, we'll just have to wait and see how that pans out.

Smart Split

Since the third motor is only engaged in instances where more power is needed, the difference might wind up being negligible. During normal driving, only two motors are operational. The system is also capable of sending power to each wheel as needed, so it's more efficient in that way.

Sporty Alternatives

For those seeking a sportier drive from their all-electric SUV, the tri-motor E-Tron S and E-Tron Sportback S look like a great bet. Especially in such a hotly contested market. It also doesn't hurt that their styling appears to be a little more aggressive than the regular E-Tron, though it's hard to see all of it beneath that digital camo disguise.
