Audi Celebrates 20 Years of A6 Allroad with a New Model

Audi has created some of the most desirable wagons ever - but this one in particular, is its stealth SUV-killer. To celebrate 20 years of A6 Allroad, Audi has released a fourth-generation of the high-riding luxury wagon. For those who know its abilities, this is the true SUV alternative of choice. 

Looks like a station wagon - but capable of so much more

Instead  brash SUV styling elements, the A6 Allroad is a study in subtle design. The only details which allude to its latent off-road ability are those fender protectors. The overall profile and aesthetic draws its inspiration from the world of wagons, instead of SUVs. An elegant stance, which belies the Allroad's ability. The way owners prefer.

Lighting details all of its own

One feature that sets the Allroad apart from other A6s, is its slightly revised front bumper. This has been reshaped to increase the vehicle's approach angle and avoid damage on mild off-road tracks. A6 Allroad also sports its own signature daytime LED headlight configuration.

An Audi for adventuring

What makes the A6 Allroad such a unique offering is that it comes with the lower roofline of a practical wagon, with true all-mountain ability. This is a vehicle which does not shy away from family adventure weekends in backcountry terrain. Even with the rear seats occupied, this A6 still offers 20 cu ft of luggage space.

Purposeful proportions

It might look very similar to a conventional A6 wagon, but the Allroad actually features a 1.8-inch higher roofline. The aluminum finish roof rails do their bit to help mask the higher stance. And all told, the Allroad version takes Audi's already handsome A6 wagon shape, and takes it to the next level.

It can haul too - literally

Don't be fooled by the elegant appearance, this A6 Allroad can be a true workhorse too - when required. The tow-rating is a very impressive 5000 lbs and there is special trailers-sway mitigation software programmed into the Allroad's stability algorithm, to ensure a small wobble at speed doesn't become a big problem.

You won't mind journeying hours off-road, in here

The A6 Allroad cabin is typical contemporary Audi fare, which means class and excellent quality. The center-stack houses two digital infotainment screens and the driver's instrument binnacle is fully digitized too. Trim options are either aluminum or one of two wood choices.

An A6 wagon that loves to play in the dirt

And that is what it is all about. Twenty years after the original Allroad, this new A6 still delivers a subtle wagon capable of conquering a lot of terrain. An air-suspension gives up to 5.5-inches of ground clearance, whilst Audi's vaunted quattro all-wheel-drive system provides all the traction you could require.

Gasoline engines have always come to A6 Allroad - eventually

The only issue with Audi's fourth-generation A6 Allroad is the lack of a gasoline engine options. For the moment, both engines on offer are turbodiesels. But if we look at A6 Allroad history, such as the first-generation 4.2 V8 pictured above, there is hope that perhaps a turbocharged V6 gasoline engine could be added in the near future. Perhaps for the US market?
