What’s the meaning behind the “Horch” name?

There aren’t many people out there that are familiar with Audi’s history, so “Horch” might be more of a curiosity rather than something with meaning. For the company though, it’s definitely the latter. The Horch name goes back to the company’s first few years when August Horch decided to break away from partner Karl Benz and create his own company.

From Horch to Audi

Horch was a production manager for Mercedes-Benz. Tired of the gig, he decided to start his own company with business partner Salli Herz. Together, they launched Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke AG in 1904. Five years later, the duo established the August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH. Unfortunately, August did not possess the rights to the Horch name and had to rename the second company. Following a suggestion made by the son of one of his business partners, he renamed it Audi. A few years later, Horch and Audi merged with DKW and Wanderer to form Auto Union AG in 1932.

How did we get to the Audi company we know and love today?

Following World War II, several of the company's senior managers left for Bavaria to build Auto Union GmbH. This company was then acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 1965. Since then, it’s been the Audi company we know today.

So, for the first time in a long time, Audi will be applying the storied Horch name with its A8 flagship vehicle which, it’s worth pointing out, just went through a major facelift. Per "Automotive News," Audi is targeting the launch of the new A8 to take place in the next two-to-three years.

What can we expect in the Audi A8 Horch?

Seeing as how the Audi A8 Horch is clearly being launched as a rival to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, we expect it will feature more equipment than the A8 L with the same wheelbase like the Mercedes' range-topper. Early reports suggest it will feature specially-tailored alloy wheels and a Horch badge either on front fenders or the C-pillar.

Will the Audi A8 Horch perform well on the road?

In all likelihood, the Audi A8 Horch will be outfitted with a V8 engine and an option of Volkswagen's twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 engine (currently unavailable in the A8 or its long wheelbase version). And while Mercedes plans to take the extended Maybach versions beyond the S-Class, Audi is expected to limit the Horch to A8 model.
