Audi S1 Hits the Road on Tank Treads

When preparing for off-roading, some people like to lift their cars, some like to play around with various off-roading tires, and others simply put tracks for wheels. This Audi S1 is built like a tank - literally.

But How?

1. Audi S1

If you're unfamiliar with the Audi S1, it's okay. This doesn't make you less of an Audi enthusiast, it simply makes you an American. The S1 model is not familiar to the United States' market, as it is the smallest model for Audi's European lineup. If you want an accurate estimate of how big the Audi S1 is, picture in your mind the size of a Ford Fiesta.

2. Under the S1's Hood

The Audi S1 is a fun little car, and although it is the same size as a Fiesta, it certainly performs far better. The S1 is equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSI engine, which is the same motor found in the VW GTI. The four-cylinder engine features a turbocharger, and together they deliver 231-horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

3. Fun Driver

Don't let this Audi fool you, the S1 model is no off-roader. However, if we break down how the European model drives, it is probably a fun car to be behind the wheel of. The turbocharged V-4 engine works collaboratively with a six-speed manual transmission, which sends power to all four wheels, thanks to Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. So even though this car doesn't have the standard characteristics of an off-roader, it kind of has hidden potential.

4. Tracks for Wheels

Usually crazy modifications are found on the land of the free, but Bulgaria will have to take the credit for this one. For a rather unknown reason, not that we are complaining, this crazy Audi S1 was found on a Bulgarian beach with a set of tracks for wheels. These tracks are usually found on vehicles that are designed to explore extremely icy areas with no designated roads. The tracks seem to work perfectly well on this beach, and if tanks are able to go through anything, why can't the S1?

5. But How?

From the looks of this S1, it is quite clear Audi did not slap the tracks on this car. We are not sure exactly what went into the modification, but it seems like the owner had to raise the suspension some inches to create enough clearance for the tracks that replaced the alloy wheels. The front and rear bumpers also look slightly altered, and if you look closely, you can see they have been cut to be able to house the new set of tracks. Regardless of what went into building this Audi S1, we now here all want one.
