Car and Driver Takes a Spin in the 2018 TT RS

Audi has just rolled out its 2018 TT RS and to much fanfare, at least according the car review sites. CarAndDriver.com just published an article detailing their review of the car after taking it for a spin. Here are some of the things they highlighted.

The Car Packs Some Punch

The all-wheel-drive 2018 Audi TT RS generates 354 pound-feet of torque at 1700 rpm. The driver revved the five-pot to 3500 rpm and then dumped the clutch, allowing the TT RS to blow past 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

During the course run, it pulled an 11.6-second quarter-miles at 119 mph.

The Sound is a Bit “Off”

While you will definitely notice a nice thrust driving the car, the engine sounds a bit like it’s struggling at times. The reviewer described its warble as unique, and that “…in either quiet or loud mode, it sounds so synthesized that it might as well be a four-cylinder trying to sound like a five.”

A Most Excellent Interior

The team at CarAndDriver.com feels that the 2018 TT RS is the nicest sports-car interior for less than $150,000. Described as “fastidiously detailed,” the car features seats outfitted in black leather with red contrast stitching around diamond-patterned perforations. The seatbelts, too, have red bands along their edges.

The reviewers also described the interior as spacious; in fact, more so than its competitors.

Trading in Stiffer Suspension for a More Adjustable Aystem

The 2018 Audi TT RS has stiffer fixed-rate dampers for more standard adjustable units. Technical director Eric Tingwall noted: “The short suspension travel, stiff compression, and loose rebound control mean this car can feel both harsh and springy—often in the same suspension event.”

This is all well and good on normal, smooth pavement, but on rough roads, it’s definitely noticeable.

In a Nutshell

Ultimately, CarAndDriver.com concluded that the 2018 Audi TT RS is an accomplishment and a dramatic departure from what the TT had been. Audi has stepped the performance of the little sports car up very nicely. Furthermore, the quality and the immaculate design are evident in every area of the car.

In their ranking, the car was only beaten by Porsche’s Cayman, a vehicle the folks at the site consider very nearly the perfect sports car.
