Going under the hood

When looking at what the S7 has to offer in terms of power, it’s good to compare it to its A7 brethren. So, that being the case, the A7 features a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The S7, on the other hand, features a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter powerplant. So, how does this translate? The A7 features 335hp while the S7 has 444 horsepower. Torque is improved upon as well, with the A7 offering 369 lb-feet to the S7’s 443 lb-feet. Worth noting: both feature an electric compressor powered by an on-board 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Taking a look at the outside

When looking at what the S7 has to offer in terms of looks, it’s best to compare it to the version before it, the S6. And in doing so, you’ll note a more streamlined feel to the four-door coupe model. There’s an angular, darkened grille complemented by black side mirrors. 21-inch wheels nicely contract with the car’s Glacier White Metallic paint featured in this photo. Options include the addition of quad exhaust tips to give the car a more aggressive look.

Taking a look at the interior

We’re going to now switch back to comparing the S7 to the A7. That’s because the S7’s interior is very similar to the A7, though it does come with more standard features, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, four-zone climate control, surround-view camera, and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Options for upgrades include a nearly $5000 Bang & Olufsen sound system as well as a $5,600 Prestige package, which adds rear cross-traffic alert, rear collision detection, dual-pane glass, heated rear seats, interior ambient lighting, and Audi’s laser headlights.

Other things worth noting

Audi opted to replace the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in the A7 with an eight-speed automatic. That 8 speed is the same one which is found in the RS models. That’s because the eight-speed is better at managing the extra bit of torque. Also, while understeering can be a bit ungainly, Audi is offering a $4000 S sport package option that includes all-wheel steering and a sport differential. Per the former, this enables the rear tires to turn in slightly, thereby shortening the S7’s turning radius. This trick rear differential sends extra torque to the outside rear wheel during cornering which, in turn, cuts down on understeer. And with both axles steering the car, turn-in feels extremely sharp.

I’m sold – how much is this car going to cost me?

The 2020 S7 starts at $83,900. Now, while this might seem like a steep price tag for what’s supposed to be a middle of the road car, the cost becomes a bit more curious when considering the fact that it’s more than $10,000 over the mechanically identical and slightly more practical S6. When adding options, the S7 can very quickly surpass the $100,000 benchmark. But, should you choose to go down this road, you will definitely be driving one of Audi’s better designed/produced cars to date.
