Intro

Audi offers over 41 different models for the 2024 model year. Some are fully electric, and some are still powered by internal combustion engines. However, even though Audi offers several dozen different vehicle models, their engine lineup is much simpler with only eight engine families. There is a lot of powerplant sharing among several models. Although there are a couple of Audi vehicles that do have an engine specifically designed for just that one model. Today we try to make sense of it all for you. We are breaking down all the engines (and electric motors) that you will find under the hood of the 2024 Audis. Which one is your favorite?

8. 2.0 TFSI 4 Cylinder

The smallest and least powerful engine in the Audi lineup is also the most difficult to explain. It would be easy to just say it is a 2.0L turbo 4 and it is used in a bunch of different models. But the reality is more complex than that. This engine is used in the most Audi models in 2024. There are several different horsepower and torque ratings for this engine. The 40 TFSI Q3 models makes the least power. The 45 TFSI models are more powerful. And the S3 model gets the 306-horsepower version of this engine. The most powerful version is found under the hood of the Q5 55 TFSI quattro which makes 362 horsepower. The different outputs are due primarily to turbo size and tune, however there are some internal component differences between the engines as well.

Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder

Displacement (cc): 1,984

Horsepower: 184 / 201 / 228 / 261 / 306 / 362

Torque: 221 / 251/ 273 / 295 / 369

Induction: Single Turbo

Models: A3 40 TFSI/quattro, S3, A4 40 TFSI quattro, A4 45 TFSI quattro, A4 allroad quattro, A5 Coupe 45 TFSI quattro, A5 Cabriolet 45 TFSI quattro, A6 Sedan 45 TFSI quattro, Q3 40 TFSI quattro, Q3 45 TFSI quattro, Q5 40 TFSI quattro, Q5 Sportback 45 TFSI quattro, Q5 45 TFSI quattro, Q5 55 TFSI quattro, Q7 45 TFSI quattro.

7. 2.5L TFSI 5 Cylinder

Unlike the 2.0L 4 cylinder that is found in darn near every model that Audi makes, the 2.5L inline 5-cylinder is found under the hood of the RS 3 performance sedan and only the RS 3. This dynamo of an engine can get the little sedan to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. And it makes a satisfying sound along the way that only a turbocharged 5 banger can make.

Engine Type: Inline 5-cylinder

Displacement (cc): 2,480

Horsepower: 401

Torque: 369

Induction: Single Turbo

Models: RS 3 Sedan quattro

6. 3.0L TFSI V6

The 3.0L TFSI V6 engine is another bread-and-butter engine for Audi. They put this engine in everything from the S4 and S5 performance cars to the large Q8 SUV. All engines get the same 369 pound-feet of torque rating, but the performance cars are tuned for a bit more horsepower.

Engine Type: V6

Displacement (cc): 2,995

Horsepower: 335 / 349

Torque: 369

Induction: Single Turbo

Models: S4 Sedan quattro, S5 Coupe quattro, S5 Sportback quattro, S5 Cabriolet quattro, A6 Sedan 55 TFSI quattro, A6 allroad quattro, A7 55 TFSI quattro, A8 L 55 TFSI quattro, SQ5 quattro, SQ5 Sportback quattro, Q7 55 TFSI quattro, Q8 55 TFSI quattro.

5. 2.9L TFSI V6

Audi stuffs a 2.9 twin-turbo engine under the hood of its middle grade performance cars. The engine has the same horsepower and torque rating in each model. So, when you are shopping these vehicles against each other, you are comparing style and practicality more than any significant performance differences.

Engine Type: V6

Displacement (cc): 2,894

Horsepower: 444

Torque: 442

Induction: Twin Turbo

Models: RS 5 Coupe quattro, RS 5 Sportback quattro, S6 Sedan quattro, S7 Sedan quattro.

4. 4.0L biturbo TFSI V8

Audi breaks out the powerful 4.0L twin-turbo V8 to power its big guns. The least powerful version still makes 500 horsepower in the SQ7. But that ramps all the way up to an absurd 621 horsepower in the RS 6, and RS 7. These engines are only topped by the most powerful electric motors found in the Audi performance EVs.

Engine Type: V8

Displacement (cc): 3,996

Horsepower: 500 / 563 / 591 / 621

Torque: 568 / 590 / 627

Induction: Twin Turbo

Models: RS 6 Avant performance quattro, RS 7 performance quattro, S8 quattro, SQ7 quattro, SQ8 quattro, RS Q8 quattro.

3. Dual Motor 93 kWh

Powering what are now the most powerful Audi EVs is dual motor system with a 93.4 kWh battery. This setup is enough to launch the electric Audi sport sedans to 60 mph in about 3 seconds. And when you are not trying to set scare your passengers to death with acceleration, you will get about 249 miles of range.

Engine Type: Dual synchronous electric motors with 93 kWh Li-ion battery

Battery Size (Gross): 93.4 kWh

Horsepower: 523 / 637 in boost mode

Models: e-tron GT, RS e-tron GT

2. Single / Dual Motor 82 kWh

You can get the all-electric Q4 e-tron in several different strengths. There is a single and dual motor option. The single motor option makes the least amount of power with only the rear motor. The dual motor setups make considerably more power although it comes at the expense of a shorter range.

Engine Type: Rear permanently excited synchronous motor and front asynchronous motor

Battery Size (Gross): 82 kWh

Horsepower: 201 / 295 / 335

Models: Q4 40 e-tron, Q4 50 e-tron quattro, Q4 Sportback 50 e-tron quattro, Q4 55 e-tron Premium quattro.

1. Dual Motor / Tri Motor 114 kWh

Audi offers a dual electric motor setup in the Q8 e-tron models, and a triple electric motor setup in the SQ8 e-tron models. At 114 kWh the battery capacity in the Q8 e-tron line is the largest in the Audi electric vehicle lineup.

Engine Type: Dual electric motors / Three asynchronous electric motors

Battery Size (Gross): 114 kWh

Horsepower: 402 / 496

Models: Q8 e-tron quattro, Q8 Sportback e-tron quattro, SQ8 e-tron quattro,

SQ8 Sportback e-tron quattro.
