Long Wheelbase

It's a common occurrence nowadays to see luxury manufacturers create long-wheelbase versions of their models exclusively for China. It's an already huge market that continues to grow. So it only makes sense that companies like Audi are going the extra mile to cater to that particular audience.

Aimed For Chinese Markets

Luxury vehicles like Audis are often purchased by wealthier members of society, and many of these folks prefer to be driven around by a chauffeur. A roomy second row is a common characteristic of luxury limos. The new A7L joins the lineup of long-wheelbase Audis, which includes the A3, A4, A6, Q2, and Q5. An updated Q5L was also unveiled in Shanghai last week.

A7L

The A7L shows a more dramatic change in its proportions than other long-wheelbase conversions do. The standard A7 has become known for its sleek Sportback look. But with the A7L, the designers opted to do away with the hatchback and replace it with a conventional trunk.

No More Hatchback

The decision to depart from the fastback design is understandable. Unlike ordinary sedans, where the cabin can simply be extended without heavily modifying the structure and the vehicle's visual proportions, the A7's Sportback look could not be easily modified for a longer rear passenger area. Additionally, the sedan layout provides for significantly more headroom at the rear as well.

3.85 Inches of Additional Legroom

The A7L's wheelbase measures 3.85 inches longer than the regular A7, all of which is added to the rear legroom. Despite the major redesign, the A7L maintains a beautifully elegant character. Only one powertrain option has been announced thus far, and that's a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with mild hybrid capability.
