Rimac Could Help Audi Create the EV R8 Successor

Audi is following in suit with other VW Group brands such as Porsche, Bugatti, and maybe even Lamborghini for some electric oomph. In lieu of photos of what this fantastical creation would be like, we instead have the awesome V10 Plus done up by Boden Autohaus.

With the world increasingly moving away from internal combustion engines to batteries and drive motors, the VW Group sees the writing on the wall. According to a report by UK outfit Car, Audi has reportedly reached out to Rimac for help on the German automaker's upcoming fully electric successor to the R8.

Start now trying to convince your family that you need it

The new EV supercar will allegedly be called the RS e-tron and will have a price tag of around $224,416 with a release date of about 2023-2024. Rimac will be helping with by supplying Audi with four beefy electric motors and fast-charging batteries to push the car to untold limits with a shortened downtime of charging.

All the power and no fuel stops

The RS e-tron is planning to be built in the Bollomnger Höfe factory which is also where Audi builds the A6/A7/A8. A good chunk of the RS e-tron would be done by Rimac at their HQ in Croatia where the powertrain and batteries are reportedly good for 950bhp. The 0-62 mph time will supposedly be just 2.5 seconds and the car will feature an all-wheel-drive quattro setup.

Should the car make the transition from lofty goals to physical manifestation it will feature a lightweight aluminum chassis and be capable of 300 miles fo range thanks to solid-state 95-kWh batteries. In order to keep the price tag in a somewhat reasonable neighborhood, Audi is thinking of basing the RS e-tron on the  J1 platform that is used by the Porsche Taycan.

Inspiring the next generation

Electric vehicles currently use lithium-ion batteries for the power sources but folks in the know point to solid-state battery tech as the future with its faster-charging capabilities and capacity for longer ranges.

I for one am excited that more brands are moving towards building EV sportscars and not just prettier sedans. Sure, the sedans and crossovers will move units and keep the lights on but the sportscars are the ones that push imagination and get hung up on bedroom walls.
