Channeling that original Quattro purpose

What is the modern incarnation of Audi’s legendary Quattro two-door sportscar? We’d answer that it is the current RS5 coupe that carry that banner aloft for the automaker. It has a svelte shape with two-doors which is enough room for rear passengers, and all the best components to enable true driving pleasure. Best of all, Audi has added some subtle upgrades, for its RS5 that push that sentiment ever further.

Saving weigh where it matters most

The RS5 is simply one of the most handsome coupe vehicles in production today. It’s proportions and the sheet metal-to-wheelbase ratio is absolutely perfect. A new design detail for this year is the composite roof option, which lowers weight by 8.8 pounds at the highest point of the RS5. That might not sound like much, but saving weight in the roof structure has a remarkably significant influence on any vehicle’s overall dynamics. This is due to the leverage effect between a vehicle’s great center of gravity point and the highest point from the road. Which, as you guessed, is always the roof.

Two very striking RS5 options

Both of the RS5 derivatives, the coupé, and the five-door Sportback have the same new front styling. The single-frame grille is larger than before, and you’ll notice the heritage Quattro inspired slots where the hood shut line resides. In addition, there are new headlights too, which feature the very latest Audi LED and matrix laser illumination technology. It all a fantastic blend of form and function.

Secure and fabulously comfy seats

As with any RS-specification Audi, the updated RS5 models feature incredibly good cabin ergonomics and architecture. Audi designers have always managed to deliver a driving environment where both the helmsman and passengers feel immersed and comfortable. A crucial aspect of achieving that is the RS-grade semi-bucket seats. They feature a special hexagon quilted pad surface which creates terrific comfort levels even after many hours.

Fewer buttons and more displays

Those Audi fans who are deeply familiar with the RS5 will notice that it has gained some fairly major digital upgrades for this year. The car’s infotainment and driver information systems are now on par with other large Audi models. Those upgrades entail a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment and the option of a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, which can showcase a huge variety of selectable readouts.

Big speed for these V6 RS5s

Powering the RS5 is Audi’s celebrated 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. You can see those large-diameter exhaust tips flanking each side of the bumper mean business. The boosted V6 engine is good for a peak power output of 444hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Channeling power to all four wheels via Audi’s tried and true all-wheel-drive system ensures stout performance. The RS5 is capable of 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 174mph.

RS5 Sportback is a fine family sportscar

For this year the RS5 factory wheel size is 19-inches with no fewer than three 20-inch options. Steel brakes are standard, but again, owners can upgrade to a composite-ceramic brake rotor too. But which of the two RS5 models is best for you? The coupé looks fantastic and will have a slightly stiffer chassis with only two doors. Then again, if you want a family-sized sportscar, it is hard to argue with the practicality and luggage space offered by the RS5 Sportsback.
