6. Audi E-Tron Spyder

Yes, this is cheating because it never made it to production, but it sure shows Audi's commitment to performance and the environment. When we think of Audi, state of teh art engineering and performance are the first things that come to mind, the E-Tron Spyder concept demonstrates Audi's desire to merge environmentally cautious strategies with the cutting-edge elegance they're known for. This Spyder model was only shown at a few car shows back in 2010-11, but it's been impossible to forget it. Management decided there just wasn't a strong enough business case for it, though if it had a Tesla badge on it they'd sell like hot cakes. If the future means eco-friendly roadsters that can hit 155 mph, well... let's just say we're looking forward to tomorrow.

5. Audi A4

Audi more than anyone created the modern aerodynamic car shape, and they still do it better than the rest. While the efficient TDI (51 mpg) version is no longer sold in the USA, a reworked design in 2015 capitalized on the model's potential for efficiency, and with the new TSFI Ultra motor is EPA rated at 37 mpg highway, 27 city. The last we checked, the new Audi A4s feature impressively minimal CO2 output, emitting a bare 95g for every kilometer. With this and more clothed into a classic exterior design, it's clear Audi know how to adapt their product line to coincide with the ever-growing "green boom."

4. Audi A6 TDI

Unfortunately, this A6 is no longer sold in the USA because of the VW/Audi diesel emissions issue, even though it does not have the 2.0 liter motor. When this car went on sale in the United States in 2014 it offered 240 hp and an amazing 428 lb-ft of torque, all while getting 38 mpg on the highway, and 24 in the city. Sure, those numbers pale in comparison to many economy cars, but this is 100% in luxury and handling, and hits 60 mph in just a bit over 5 seconds. Hopefully, once Audio and the EPA work things out we'll be able to buy a TDI powered luxury sedan again.

3. Audi A3 1.9 TDI

The A3 1.9 TDI is a remarkable little vehicle, offering Audi levels of luxury in a compact car, with amazing fuel economy. The distinctive A3 body slips easily through the wind, and the diesel-powered, the A3 1.9 TDI boasts incredible efficiency of 43 mpg highway, and 31 city. Even so, you still get to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds, with impressive grunt right off the line for city driving. Generally considered as a diesel alternative to complicated hybrid models, Audi took great lengths to ensure the car would make the very most of its diesel capabilities. Unfortunately, this one is also on hold for the time being.

2. Audi A3 E-Tron Plug-in Hybrid

The plug-in hybrid format of the A3 E-Tron allows it to maximize efficiency without skimping on its utility as a potential long distance vehicle. While the E-Tron can take you 19 miles on a fully charged battery, you'll be able to conceivably go as far as you want with the gas motor. Although it bears reminding that a 19 mile range still accounts for 95% of trips you'll take, the consideration of the hybrid mode combined with the A3's trademark sportiness could make this a great choice for someone wanting to go hi-tech with their next auto purchase. It is hard to explain fuel economy in a plug-in hybrid, but the EPA says this car gets 86 MPGe, and 39 MPG when running the gas engine.

1. Audi E-diesel Fuel

Hmm, maybe we're cheating again on this one, because e-diesel isn't a car, but nonetheless it may very well be Audi's most important contribution to helping the environment. Audi's experimental research branch has seen fit to synthesize a green diesel fuel made of just carbon dioxide and water. It almost sounds like science fiction, but it's true. The fuel itself will work in any diesel engine without further modifications, and Audi actually proved the technology several years ago. The only setback is that they have not been able to scale up the process, so they are only able to produce a small amount a year, which would barely make an impact on the global energy market. Even so, Audi have given us an extra reason to feel optimistic for the future.
