The shims have a rubberized coating under adhesive, you can see here two of my old ones. Top has been wire wheeled clean but near the center I went too far and wore past the rubberized layer. Don't be too heavy handed....
It's best to replace these but I understand $250 is a lot, I opted for replacement but if you don't do so then I'll explain how to apply new adhesive/a good type to use.
